TANGOALPHA3 IS EXCITED TO INTRODUCE A NEW CONTENT SERIES FOCUSED ON HIGHLIGHTING THE MANY EXCELLENT VETERANS WE’VE ASSISTED IN FINDING JOB PLACEMENTS.
The Veteran Spotlight series is a chance for us to catch up with our community of veteran talent. We discuss things like how their current job placement is going, what it was like while on the job hunt, as well as any challenges they may have faced while transitioning from the military to the private sector. In the end, it’s a great way to highlight excellent people and provide an inside vantage point into some of the services we provide and industries we serve.
WE RECENTLY SAT DOWN WITH DUAN TO CATCH UP AND ASK HIM ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE ON THE JOB HUNT AND WHAT’S IT’S BEEN LIKE SINCE BEING PLACED AT THE DEFENSE HEALTH AGENCY’S ESB
Database Administrator – Defense Health Agency’s (DHA) Enterprise Service Branch (ESB)
Duan has been with TangoAlpha3 since early 2020, supporting the Defense Health Agency’s (DHA) Enterprise Service Branch (ESB) as a Database Administrator. Although Duan’s initial training in the military was as a Signal Systems Support Specialist (25U), over the course of his military career he was always picking up new skills as roles can become very fluid when an environment requires support and you aren’t in a position to add to the team…it requires someone learn something new. And Duan used the opportunity presented by “necessity” to learn how to be a Database Administrator, in addition to all the other skills he had already acquired. Even after transitioning into civilian life, he continued to wear a lot of different hats, but the role he is in now allows him to specialize a bit more and he has proven to be up to the task. Speaking of tasks, he continues to serve our country in the US Army Reserves…which is a particularly important institution at times as challenging as they are now.
What was your initial job search experience like?
My initial job search was exhausting, I applied to many jobs that I was unable to keep up with. I contemplated on where I would like to live. I applied for positions in Germany, other places overseas and Texas.
Did you face any challenges when you first transitioned from the military into the private sector?
I didn’t face too many challenges when I first transitioned from the military into the private sector. I was confident that my Army experiences would help with entering the private sector.
What is a typical day at work like for you?
As a Database Administrator, on a typical day at work I manage SCOM/SQL Servers. I check my alerts and event logs to see if any servers are having issues. I plan, install configure, migrate, check performance monitoring, security, troubleshooting, as well as backup and data recovery.
How has your military training and experience helped you in the private sector?
My military training and experience helped because I didn’t need any additional training…I was already very accustomed to picking up new tasks and learning new things while sustaining an enterprise environment.
What advice would you give to transitioning veterans looking for their first job after leaving the military?
I would tell transitioning veterans to ensure it’s the position they really want and think they will enjoy. Also, trust the training you gained in the military…have every confidence that you are well prepared to succeed.
What has your experience been like working with TangoAlpha3?
TangoAlpha3 has been the smoothest company I have worked for. They made it an easy transition when coming on board. Unlike most recruiters, mine kept his promise with keeping in good contact with me once a position became available. HR provided good how-to’s when accessing benefits and other significant questions.
